SAMPURNA RAMAYANA
A pattachitra depicting the entire epic of Ramayana

Pattachitra is a traditional cloth based scroll painting of Orissa. Patta means clothes and Chitra means painting. Pattachitra is manifested for its intricate details as well as narratives and rich colourful application, creative motives, decorative border, and portrayal of themes like mythological narratives, scenes from religious texts, folktales inscribed on it. The present object is a pattachitra depicting different episodes from Ramayana, which are beautifully narrated in this painting. Lord Rama and Sita graced the majestic throne, and Hanuman seated in front of Lord Rama's feet as his disciple depicted in the center. On both sides, avatars of Lord Vishnu are painted. Different episodes like Lord Vishnu reclining on the coil of great serpent Sheshnaag, King Dasharatha blessed with four sons Rama, Laxman, Bharata and Shatrughna, encounter of demon Taraka with Lord Rama, marriage of Lord Rama with Sita, fourteen years exile in the forest, killing of Jayatu by Ravana and abducting Sita and Sita proves her chastity by entering into fire etc. are painted in circles covering four sides of the painting.
