Khram
A double membrane musical drum
Khram is a traditional musical instrument of the Dimasa community of Assam. It is a double-membrane musical drum having a cylindrical wooden shell with open ends. The ends are covered by a membrane generally made of deer skin. The skin and the wooden body are both attached to each other with a rope made from buffalo skin. It is played with sticks on one side and with fingers on the other side. Khram is made by cutting branches from the Jasim tree and slitting the branches in half. It is an important instrument played during Bihu festival. The same kind of musical instrument with little variation in shape and size is widely used in Assam by different communities like Rabha, Bodo, Tiwa, etc. with different names. This traditional instrument has added substantial value to the musical tradition of Assam.
